So you’ve decided to start investing and you want to choose a mutual fund.
You squared your shoulders, you piled up some money, and you’ve planted yourself in front of your computer.
Now what? What do you choose?
Let’s face it, investing is complicated. There are a ton of options to choose from and things change DAILY. To top it all off, you are putting your hard-earned cash in someone else’s hands with hopes they will spin your straw into gold so that you can retire some day and live happily ever after.
I remember those days! And my strategy started with, “follow the bright shiny objects.” Well, it didn’t exactly go well in the beginning. Those bright shiny objects had a way of burning out and crashing.
Over time, I came up with a better way of doing things that has worked out extremely well for me with so much less stress (when it comes to investing, there’s no such thing as no stress…..things go up, and then they go down…stressful!). I’m lucky to say I’ll be able to retire by the time I’m 62 based on the investing process I’m going to show you today. I’ll show you, step-by-step, how I pick mutual funds.
There are 2 steps to my process:
- Set some goals and objectives for what I want my investments to do.
- Choose a mutual fund that will achieve those goals and objectives. (I know, kind of obvious)
First, I’m going to show you what your goals and objectives should look like. There are six questions you want to answer before you do anything. This step is the one that helped me overcome shiny object syndrome.
Did you know there are 9,400 mutual funds in the U.S.?
That’s a lot of options and a lot of shiny objects. Deciding what you are trying to accomplish, before you start sorting through your options, is a key part of the process. These six questions will help you narrow down your search.
Second, I’m going to show you how to research those 9,400 options and quickly narrow down the ones that will work the best for you.
In this step, I’m going to take you step-by-step through the actual research process. Have you ever looked at a prospectus (the document that tells you EVERYTHING about an investment)? It’s a monster of overwhelming legalize and number talk. We aren’t going to go there. I’m going to show you how to find the handful of facts to focus on, that will let you pick the perfect mutual fund.
(In full disclosure, I’m not a professional financial advisor. I’m not going to give you specific funds to invest in. I AM going to show you the process I’ve used to build my portfolio. If you feel like you need one on one support, you should consider talking with a pro.)
If you want to feel more confident about actually finding the RIGHT mutual fund, watch this week’s episode.
You work hard for your money. You deserve to have your money work hard for you. You’ve taken a huge first step by deciding its time to take control of your investments and you deserve a path that will bring you success.
I want you to have the retirement you dream of. Let’s face it, you need money to do that. I want you to not only have the money you need, but I want you to have peace and confidence TODAY, that you know you are on track to have it all.
If you have questions on the steps, please ask me in the comments below. Don’t be shy. Chances are about 100% that whatever you are doing, whatever challenge you face, someone else is in the same shoes. Your story may help them and make them feel no so quite alone.
Thank you so much for watching, sharing, and encouraging everybody else in this community. You make a difference!
Ps…we’ll be talking about this in the private FB group. Come on over and join the group and join the conversation!
